Ultrasound

Ultrasound is high frequency sound waves above 20 kilohertz (kHz) up to 300 kHz. As a comparison, the average human’s perception falls around 16 kHz. Commonly used for leak detection, mechanical and electrical inspections, Ultrasound is one of the more flexible CBM technologies on the market.

Although Ultrasound testing provides many benefits, there are two primary areas that generate the greatest value to a plant:  air leak detection and electrical applications.

For example, for air leak detection, based on 100 PSIG @ $.31/CFM, 8,760 hours, a 1/4” diameter hole at 103.00 CFM can cost a plant $16,744/year.

For electrical applications, safety is always a concern. Ultrasound can be used as a safety precaution for identifying failure modes such as Arching, Tracking and Corona.

What are some of the more common failure modes that Ultrasound detects?

  • Compressed gas leaks
  • Heat exchangers
  • Boilers and condensers
  • Tanks and pipes
  • Valves and steam traps
  • Arching, tracking, corona
  • Switchgear
  • Transformers
  • Bearing faults
  • Gear problems
  • Circuit breakers
  • Coupling defects
